FAQs

How long do the classes last?

Most courses comprise four classes. Classes are three hours in duration. They run once a week, for four consecutive weeks.

Intensive courses (two x six-hour classes) are held on consecutive Saturdays.

Can I copy an item of clothing that I already own?

Sure you can. But first you’ll need a pattern. You can either take one of our Pattern Drafting courses, or you can employ a pattern maker to draft one for you. Ask instore for Gardams’ recommended pattern drafting services.

What do I need to bring?

Do I need my own sewing machine?

No, we have sewing machines available for use. However, you are welcome to bring your own machine to use in our classes. And we have machines available to buy.

Do I need any sewing experience?

No, you don’t need any prior experience to enrol in our beginners’ course. If you are confident with sewing basics, feel free to investigate our other courses.

BEGINNERS SEWING CLASS

The basic skirt

This class is designed for those eager to enter the sewing realm, or wishing to refresh their skills.

Lessons are easy to follow and give you the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to pursue basic garment construction. The course comprises one 3-hour lesson per week for 4 consecutive weeks. Classes are a maximum of 6 people, and are held in our Indooroopilly store. Please check for starting dates for each course.

Lessons 1 & 2

Using a basic skirt pattern (your choice, not included), this lesson covers fabric selection, correct pattern sizing, and learning how to read and adjust the pattern to suit various figure types. Selection of the types of zipper, thread, needles, and interfacing is required.

These classes will cover laying out the pattern correctly on your selected fabric, cutting out, and pinning together the pieces of the garment. You will learn how to cut and apply various interfacings and linings, as required for assembling in the next lesson.

Lessons 3 & 4

Garment construction. Now we will have some fun putting your garment together. You assemble your cut garment pieces. These lessons cover sewing machine settings, including correct tension, stitch length, and needles. You will also begin to learn about installing zippers, then complete the garment. Finishes of all sorts will be covered, as well as the various options of hemming your garment, waistband, plus other useful hints.

Class cost: $276.

 

CHOOSE YOUR OWN PROJECT:

Pants, jacket, shirt, dress, or skirt

These classes are designed for experienced sewers wishing to master the perfect garment fit.

This course gives you the knowledge and confidence to make a garment to fit your body shape. We will discuss the type of fabric required for various styles and show a range of different finishes to achieve that professional look. The course is one 3-hour lesson for 4 consecutive weeks. Classes are a maximum 6 students, and are held in our Brisbane City store(288 Edward street). Please check for starting dates for each course.

Payment is required to confirm your place when booking all classes.

A list of requirements for the class will be provided when your place is confirmed. Sewing machines will be required for all lessons. Machines can be supplied; however, we recommended you work on your own if possible. Materials and consumables are not provided, and may be purchased on the day of the lesson, at a discount of 10%.
